American, circa 1890, Nine Patch Block patterns, each white block has a Biblical verse hand written using a fine early pen and India ink. I consider this a sort of "protective" textile. Perhaps the maker thought that she could provide safety for her loved ones sleeping under it by invoking the scriptures. Protective textiles are made in other cultures, using script (Koranic, for instance) but they are very rare in American textiles. The next two pictures are details.
